Long-Stitch Binding
Long-Stitch Binding
Long-stitch: A Versatile Structure
Saturday, February 8th, 2025
10:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Long-stitch is a binding structure that has held up in the earliest examples from the 1400s. It is a great beginner course as the materials required are essentially the text, needle, thread and cover material. Owing to its simplicity, it has spawned countless variations by bookbinders over time. It can be used with soft or rigid materials and will inspire those new to bookbinding as well as seasoned binders looking to revisit a traditional form.
Bookbinding is a great adventure to have with a friend! Sign up together and you each save $25.
The earliest surviving examples of Long-stitch originated in Europe and are often found in limp formats: parchment or vellum with occasionally reinforced spines. This structure even works on books entirely composed of fabric. The placement of sewing stations (holes) can even be so modified as to include simple graphics or text; A door of creative opportunities opens when the Long-stitch binding is grasped!
All Classes are held at Editions, located at 6520 5th Ave S #114 Seattle, WA 98108. Go through the red door (or big white door if it’s open) and turn right past the blacksmiths.
