Whether you're crafting a collection of your own poetry, reviving a forgotten treasure from the public domain, or creating the perfect fanfiction anthology, this hands-on workshop will teach you how to prepare digital text for beautiful hand-bound books. Over three hours, you'll learn the essential principles of book design, master the technical aspects of formatting for print, and understand how design choices affect the bookbinding process. You'll discover how to create professional-looking layouts that honor both your content and your craftsmanship, while avoiding common pitfalls that can compromise your binding work. Strong computer literacy and a laptop with Adobe InDesign installed and up to date are required.
Share the love! Sign up with a friend, and you each get $15 dollars off.
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
Understand the relationship between book design and binding requirements, including considerations for grain direction, signatures, margins, and spine thickness when planning their layouts and selecting paper.
Apply fundamental book design principles including typography selection, hierarchy, page proportions, and margin calculations to create readable and aesthetically pleasing layouts that complement their binding styles.
Master the technical skills needed to format text and images for printing signatures, including navigating the InDesign interface, managing parent pages, defining paragraph and character styles, and placing and manipulating images.
Troubleshoot common design and printing challenges that affect binding quality, such as creep compensation, crossover images, and proper gutters for different binding methods.
You are required to bring a laptop with Adobe InDesign installed and up to date.
