Woodcut Printmaking
Woodcut Printmaking
Sunday, February 23rd, 2025
12:00pm - 6:30 pm
Learn the process of woodcut printmaking with pre-prepared wood blocks. Participants use a reference or create an original image to transfer onto the block. Then we discuss mark making in the reductive/relief process before cutting the images and printing a small edition to take home.
Woodblocks are one of the oldest formats for making prints. A renewable resource that has a longstanding appeal as its grain characterizes the images and connects traditions from the east and the west. The difficulty of carving may give linocut or rubber stamp artists a new appreciation for the softer matrices we enjoy in our other workshops. The blocks used in class will be prepared a week in advance so that the treated wood is ready to go. The process for preparing wood blocks will be thoroughly explained so that anyone can find materials at their local hardware store and make prints at home after this workshop.
Tools & Materials: In addition to sketches and ideas, please bring some pens or pencils to transfer your designs. If you have carving tools, great! Some may be available; ink and paper will be provided.
All Classes are held at Editions, located at 6520 5th Ave S #114 Seattle, WA 98108. Go through the red door (or big white door if it’s open) and turn right past the blacksmiths.
If you have any questions about this class, please contact the coordinator: sarah@editions.studio.
